understanding Children's therapy

What is children's therapy?

Children's therapy is a professional, evidence-based form of psychotherapy designed specifically for the developmental needs of children. Through age-appropriate conversation, play, and structured activities, your child works with a Registered Psychotherapist to explore emotions, build coping skills, and navigate challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

"Children don't always have the words for what they're feeling. Therapy gives them a space to express, explore, and grow; at their own pace."

Unlike adult therapy, children's sessions are adapted to your child's age, communication style, and comfort level. The goal isn't to talk through problems the way adults might, it's to meet your child where they are and build the skills they need to thrive.

our approach

How we work with children

Our therapist tailors every session to the individual child: their age, personality, and what they're working through. No two children are the same, and no two sessions look exactly alike.

🎨
Play & Expressive Techniques

For younger children especially, play is a natural language. Your child's therapist uses age-appropriate activities, art, and expressive tools to help children communicate and process what they're experiencing.

🧠
Cognitive & Emotional Skills

Children learn practical tools for managing big emotions, navigating social challenges, and building resilience; skills they can use inside and outside the therapy room.

👪
Family-Informed Care

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process. Your child's therapist works collaboratively with your family to ensure the support at home reinforces what's being built in sessions.

the process

What to expect

Children's therapy is structured a little differently from adult sessions. Here's how it works from your first contact with us.

1

Free 20-minute consultation

A no-pressure visit to our Petawawa office with the parent or guardian to discuss your child's needs, ask questions, and confirm we're a good fit. No obligation to proceed.

2

Your child's first session

The first session is about getting comfortable. Your child's therapist will take time to build rapport and understand what your child is experiencing. Parents are welcome to be present for part or all of the first session; whatever helps your child feel most at ease.

3

Ongoing sessions

Each 50-minute session is structured around your child's needs. Approximately 40–45 minutes is dedicated to your child, either individually with the therapist, or with a parent present if that best supports the child. The remaining time is used to debrief with the parent or guardian, covering what was discussed, any observations, and recommended next steps.

Some children benefit from having a parent involved throughout sessions. Others do better working one-on-one with the therapist. Your child's therapist will guide what works best.

Between sessions, your therapist may recommend specific activities, tools, or approaches to practise at home. These are an important part of building skills and reinforcing progress outside the therapy room.

4

Progress and next steps

As your child's needs stabilize and their skills grow, sessions can naturally wind down in frequency, transitioning to occasional check-ins rather than regular appointments. The goal is to give your child the tools to navigate life with confidence, and to know support is available when they need it.
